Description

The research has been commissioned by the Next Page Foundation and the Open Society Foundation – Budapest (OSI) and conducted by M. Malmisanij, a Kurdish writer and intellectual residing currently in Sweden. It is a part of a research series covering the book publishing in Kurdish language in Syria, Turkey and Iraq. The studies on Syria and Turkey were completed in 2006 and the one on Iraq is forthcoming.

Based on a conducted fieldwork, this first of its kind research looks at the historical background and the current political environment. Apart from the concrete figures related to the book publishing in Kurdish language in Turkey, it also gives contact details and brief information on some publishing houses. In most of the countries where Kurds live nowadays, the use of their language – with its different dialects and three alphabets (Arabic, Latin and Cyrillic), is banned in one way or another. Kurmanci and Kırmancki are the two Kurdish dialects spoken in Turkey, which since 1928 use the Latin alphabet.
